Flooding affects 31,290 in Negros, Bacolod; rains trigger landslides

Heavy rains induced by Typhoon Goring caused flooding that affected 9,224 families with 31,290 members in Bacolod City and eight other local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental on Sunday and Monday, August 27 and 28.

The heavy rains also destroyed some houses, triggered landslides and caused a road to cave in.

Goring was not directly hitting Negros Occidental and Bacolod City but was enhancing the Southwest Monsoon that is expected to bring rains for the next three days, the state weather bureau PAGASA said Monday.

Flooding hit 14 barangays in Bacolod City affecting 1,772 families with 6,178 members, of which 6,048 sought shelter in evacuation centers, Dr. Anna Maria Laarni M. Pornan, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head, reported at 6 p.m. Monday, August 28.

Bacolod DRRMO personnel and firefighters conducted rescue operations in various part of the city starting Sunday night as flood waters rose.

The flooding occurred in barangays 36, 40, 39, Alijis, Felisa, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Pahanocoy, Punta Taytay, Sum-ag, Singcang-Airport, Taculing, Tangub, and Vista Alegre, Pornan reported.

Irene Bel Ploteña Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) head, said hit by flooding in Negros Occidental were Bago City affecting 3,381 individuals, Pulupandan – 1,763, San Enrique – 11,791, Valladolid – 6,195, Murcia – 1,748, Pontevedra – 132, Isabela – 53 and Binalbagan – 7 families.

The total residents affected in the seven LGUs were 8,045 families with 25,063 members. The families inside evacuation centers were 719 composed of 3,363 individuals, Ploteña added.

Mayor Marxlen dela Cruz said 10 families with 49 members were also affected by the heavy rains in Don Salvador Benedicto and four houses were destroyed.

He said heavy rainfall also caused a road and retaining wall at the newly widened Angso-an Bridge in Barangay Pandanaon, Don Salvador Benedicto, to cave in, he said.

The road has caved-in and the retaining wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall at the newly constructed Angso-an Bridge widening in Brgy. Pandanon, Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, Mayor Marxlen de la Cruz said.*

There were landslides reported in Barangay Ilijan, Bago City, and in Purok Kulasi, Barangay Kumaliskis, and Purok Langka, Barangay Bunga in Salvador Benedicto, Ploteña also reported.

Houses destroyed were in Binalbagan – one and Valladolid – six, while damaged were four each in Valladolid and San Enrique, she added.*
