Fire hits 93 San Carlos houses, 388 residents left homeless

A fire hit 93 houses leaving 388 persons homeless at Greenville Bato, Brgy Rizal in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, Monday afternoon.The fire destroyed 83 houses and damaged six in a highly congested area with a narrow pathway that made it difficult for firefighters to enter, Chief Inspector Erwin Johannes Gimotea, San Carlos Fire Marshal, said on Tuesday.

“The fire was triggered by an electrical ignition due to overloading from an octopus connection of wires wherein a 6-gang connection cord was also attached to a 3-gang extension cord,” the San Carlos Fire Sation reported.

The fire broke out at 12:46 p.m. and damage was estimated at P2,613,450, it added.

There were 98 families with 388 members affected, Joe Recalex Alingasa Jr., City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer, said.

The fire engulfed houses made of light and combustible materials on a 7,467 property owned by BB Garita and others, he said.*
