Fire hits 25 San Carlos houses, 102 residents affected, 94 displaced

A fire hit 25 houses and displaced 94 residents at Hope Street, Brgy. 5, San Carlos City, on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The blaze broke out at around 11:19 a.m. near the barangay hall, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported.

A total of 25 families or 102 individuals were affected.

Of these, 22 families with 94 individuals are staying at the Brgy. 5 barangay hall covered court, while three families chose not to evacuate.

One resident, 68-year-old Leonardo Sosmenia, sustained a foot injury and was treated at San Carlos City Hospital.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office has set up an evacuation camp and provided hot meals for displaced residents, while Mayor Rene Gustilo personally visited the affected community to oversee response efforts.

The victims have already been given assistance, Joe Recalex Alingasa, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer, said.

The fire started from an unattended stove where rice was being cooked, said FO1 Rochel Ann Batayola, chief of the Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the Bureau of Fire Protection in San Carlos City.

The damage was estimated at more than P306,250, she said.

The houses were made of light materials and built close together, which caused the fire to spread quickly, Batayola added.*
