DSWD chief orders prepositioning of 100k food packs in Negros Island

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian has ordered the prepositioning of 100,000 family food packs (FFPs) in Negros Island amid a looming Kanlaon Volcano eruption.

Gatchalian has directed the agency’s Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) to work double time in the prepositioning of FFPs as augmentation to the stockpiles, a post on the DSWD Facebook page on Sunday, Jan. 12, said.

He also assured DSWD regional directors Shalaine Lucero of Central Visayas and Arwin Razo of Western Visayas that they will receive their additional FFPs starting Sunday.

The goal is to preposition 100,000 boxes of FFPs in Negros Island , he said.

“We will fill our provincial warehouses on the island to the brim,” Gatchalian said.

Lucero said she has directed their Central Visayas warehouse manager to check on other warehouses to serve as back-up for the prepositioned FFPs.

Razo told Gatchalian that the DSWD-rented warehouse in Bacolod can accommodate up to 50,000 boxes of food packs.

“I have instructed my team to check on other available warehouses of LGUs (local government units) that can be used,” Razo reported.

Gatchalian wants 40,000 boxes of food packs in Negros Oriental and another 40,000 FFPs in Negros Occidental by Monday.

“Check the maximum capacity for both sides of Kanlaon. I want maximum capacity in the warehouses of Negros Oriental and Occidental. So we have to be ready,” Gatchalian said.

There are currently 5,818 persons displaced by Kanlaon Volcano’s Dec. 9 eruption in evacuation centers in Negros Island the DSWD Western Visayas reported on Sunday.

There are also 5,555 displaced persons outside evacuations centers, it added.

The number of evacuees will increase if Kanlaon Volcano’s alert level is raised from three to four.*
