Driver dies, 3 injured in multiple collision

A driver died and three others were injured after a dump truck carrying sugarcane fell over a tricycle during a multiple collision in Hacienda Leonor, Brgy. Paraiso, Sagay City, Wednesday night, Jan. 15.

The tricycle driver identified by the police only as alias “Edmund”, 35, died while his passenger alias “Bernard”, 26, was injured when he jumped off the vehicle.

Lt. Col. Alvimar Flores, Sagay City Police Chief, said that the dump truck was headed towards a sugar mill when a trailer truck driven by alias “Felipe”, 52, was fast approaching from behind.

Felipe stepped on the trailer truck’s brakes but failed to stop the vehicle causing it to collide with the dump truck and a wing van that stopped to give way.

The trailer truck bumped the back of the dump truck causing it to fall on its side where the tricycle driven by Edmund was passing.

The drivers of the dump truck and wing van were also injured and are now in stable condition, the police said.

Felipe is now under police custody and it has not been determined if the family of the tricycle driver and the others injured will file cases against him.

Flores said charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide, physical injuries, and damage to property could be filed against the trailer truck driver.*
