Health Undersecretary Mary Ann Palermo-Maestral on Friday, Sept. 26, reminded all those who waded through flood waters during Severe Tropical Storm “Opong” to seek prophylaxis to avoid leptospirosis.

“For all those affected by the floods caused by Typhoon Opong, you can go to the nearest primary care facility to be given prophylaxis medicine to avoid getting sick with the dreaded leptospirosis,” she said.

It is free in all primary care facilities (rural health units), she added.

“If the center is out of stock, please contact the Department of Health Office, Provincial Health Office or Bacolod City Health Office because we will replenish supply,” Maestral said.

Prophylaxis is a medical treatment given to prevent disease.

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, especially rats, which can contaminate floodwaters.

The primary danger of leptospirosis is its potential to cause severe, life-threatening multi-organ failure if not treated promptly, the DOH warns.*
