Diocese of San Carlos opposes proposed Sagay mining project

The Diocese of San Carlos is opposing the proposed Sagay Mining Project of Tambuli Mining Co. in Brgy. Lopez Jaena, Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

The project aims to extract and process of chalcocite copper deposits, the Diocese of San Carlos collective statement issued Tuesday, January 9, said.

“We express deep concern over Tambuli Mining Co.’s failure to address vital issues raised, particularly the potential impacts on soil, air, water, and the overall community well-being,” the statement said.

Of significant worry is the proposed mining project’s proximity to Tan-ao River and Himogaan River, both essential for fishing, vegetable gardening, irrigation, and fishponds, it said.

The statement also said Himogaan River holds cultural importance, hosting the ”Adlaw Sang Suba” and supporting tourist activities, irrigating sugarcane fields, and aiding fishing in coastal areas.

These rivers discharge into the Sagay Marine Reserve, amplifying ecological concerns, it added.

“To date, the company’s inability to provide satisfactory responses underscores the urgent need for a thorough examination of potential impacts on the community’s natural resources”, the statement said.

The collective statement was signed by San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, Fr. Juluis G. Tormis – Lunhaw Ecology Ministry director, Fr. Ricky R. Beboso – Diocesan Social Action Center director and Fr. Joferson P. Garces – St. Joseph Parish-Sagay priest.*
