DILG: NegOr political tension de-escalated, Degamo back

Gov. Roel Degamo is back.*

Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said on Wednesday, October 12, that the political tension in Negros Oriental has de-escalated with Pryde Henry Teves stepping down to give way to a peaceful transition of leadership to Governor Roel Degamo.

Teves stepped down on Tuesday afternoon.

“We are thankful that the governorship dispute in Negros Oriental has been resolved, with Teves respecting and adhering to the Comelec ruling proclaiming Degamo as the duly elected governor of the province,” Abalos said in a statement.

Abalos lauded DILG-7 Regional Director Leocadio T. Trovela and Provincial Director Farah Gentuya for being at the helm of negotiations and for guiding the smooth transition of the governorship to Degamo.

He also thanked Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo for his role in ensuring smooth communication with both Teves and Degamo.

“With this positive development, the delivery of local government services in the province will no longer be disrupted,” Abalos said.

“We appeal to the supporters of both Degamo and Teves to set aside politics and to work in unison for the benefit and welfare of all Negrenses,” he added.

Degamo said “after the long electoral battle to regain my rightful seat, it is with great joy that I announce that we have won the battle…I express my gratitude to all of you who have believed and fought with me”.

He called on the people of Negros Oriental to continue to support him as “we work together to address the problems in our province. As I have said before, everything is a team effort but what I can promise is that we will deliver even greater service in thanksgiving for the trust you have given me”.*
