Dengue cases rising, 1 more death in Bacolod; spiders deterrents – guv

Dengue cases in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City continue to rise, with one new death reported, and many hospitals packed with patients. .

The dengue death toll in Bacolod City rose to two with one new fatality reported by the City Health Office on Tuesday, August 13.

There have also been six dengue related deaths in Negros Occidental this year, the Provincial Health Office reported.

Bacolod City has recorded 434 dengue cases this year, a 36.9 percent increase from last year’s 317.

There are 1,584 reported dengue cases in Negros Occidental this year, a 75.32 percent increase from last year, the Provincial Health Office reported.

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said it is the season among the young for collecting spiders, which are deterrents against dengue as they prevent the spread of mosquitoes.

    Dengue is a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people. 

“I am calling on the barangay officials to discourage their youth from gathering spiders. Allow them to live because they target mosquitoes,” Lacson said.

Lacson also stressed the need for residents to clean their environment to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.*
