Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Thursday, March 30, that if the assassination of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo would lead to solving other extra-judicial killings his death would not have been in vain.
He noted that previous killings in Negros Oriental are now being reviewed.
“Any killings before that have had no solutions yet should be given attention and justice should be given to the families whom the deceased left behind,” he said.
“It should not only be in one area but the whole country, “he said.
The Negros Island Political Prisoners (NIPP) in a statement on Wednesday said they hope the probe into the Degamo killing will open the way for the investigation of scores of extra-judicial killings and other impunity cases in Negros.
The NIPP said 103 political prisoners in Negros Occidental and Oriental joined an island-wide protest fast on Thursday to call for justice for all victims of Oplan Sauron, extrajudicial killings during the Duterte regime, an end to impunity and their release from jail.
Lacson said the political prisoners’ fast is their way of getting attention to their demands.
“Maybe by reviewing the cases of our political prisoners, who knows maybe some of them deserve to be released already,” he said.*
