CWS supports workers’ heat safety demands

The Churchpeople and Workers in Solidarity support the  workers’ heat safety demands in the light of the recent high heat index experienced in the country, San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza, CSW chairperson, said Friday, April 12.

Amidst record-high temperatures brought about by the effect of climate change, CWS urges employers and the Department  of Labor and Employment to take decisive action to safeguard workers’ health and safety, he said.

Hot temperatures and low compliance with occupational safety and health standards make workers more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses such as heat strokes, Alminaza said.

The bishop said CWS supports the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Development’s (IOSHD) “10 heat safety demands”:

*Heat breaks that are paid and compensable;

*Education and advocacy campaigns to prevent heat-related illnesses

should be conducted by companies;

*Assessment of health conditions and medical check-ups for workers;

*Timely, thorough and regular inspections of companies to assess their

compliance with health and safety measures;

*Shaded rest areas should be provided for workers;

*Adjust work hours and ensure that working hours are maintained;

*Free, adequate and accessible water supply;

*Effective ventilation;

*Temperature-appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE); and

*Yes to workers’ consultations.

Worker participation ensures practical and relevant heat safety measures

that respond to specific needs and challenges, Alminaza said.

“Pope Francis emphasizes that ensuring dignity of workers means guaranteeing their safety. Human dignity, safety and creativity are intimately intertwined”, the bishop said.*
