Cops nab bedridden man, wife in Silay drug bust

A bedridden man and his wife were arrested in a buy-bust operation in Brgy. E. Lopez, Silay City, Wednesday afternoon, September 27.

Melissa Baron, 39, and her husband Ronel, 31, were arrested in Hacienda Cumabat 1 and nine grams of suspected shabu worth P61,200 were seized, the police reported.

Acting Silay Police Chief Maj. Rhea Sarah Villanueva, acting Silay police chief, said that they had been monitoring the couple after receiving information that they were dealing with illegal drugs.

She said that the husband had already been apprehended for alleged drug pushing in 2020.

Currently, he is bedridden and using a wheelchair because half of his body is paralyzed after a motorcycle accident, Villanueva said.

“Despite the accident, their illegal drug activities did not stop. While he is almost immobile, his wife is the one getting in and out of the house,” she added.

Eight heat-sealed sachets of suspected shabu, the P3,000 buy-bust money, and other non-drug items were seized from the couple, the police reported.

Villanueva said that only three barangays in Silay have been drug cleared but it does not mean that their monitoring also stopped in those areas.

The suspects are now under the custody of Silay City Police Station.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Western Visayas arrested an individual for alleged possession of 21 grams of illegal drugs worth P142,800 in Brgy. 6, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Thursday, September 28.

Arrested was Lorenzo Bancal of Kabankalan, the PDEA said.*
