Contractor survives highway shooting in Santa Catalina

A contractor was wounded after he was shot along the national highway in Sitio Omanod, Brgy. San Francisco, Santa Catalina, Negros Oriental, early Wednesday morning, August 27.

Police identified the victim as Engr. Angelito Uy Mendoza, 58, a resident of Brgy. Manalongon, Santa Catalina town. 

Investigation revealed that Mendoza was driving his black Honda ADV motorcycle to his quarry site when he was shot three times in the back by an unidentified suspect on a black XRM motorcycle.

Mendoza fell to the ground and was rushed to the ACE Hospital in Bayawan City before being transferred to the Silliman University Medical Center in Dumaguete City.

Police Staff Sergeant Eldridge Carl Maghanoy, case investigator, said the victim is now in stable condition.

Recovered at the crime scene was one fired cartridge case from a .45 caliber pistol.

Police are looking at two suspects, including the gunman, who remain unidentified. Authorities also said they are eyeing a land dispute involving the victim’s quarry site as a possible motive.

Police launched Oplan Tambayayong to pursue the suspects, who fled north after the attack.
