The Negros Occidental provincial government assured the immediate repair of the approach to the Himoga-an Bridge in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, that was eroded by floodwaters on Saturday evening, Jan. 31.
The floods caused 3,144 residents of Barangays Fabrica, Poblacion 2, Paraiso, and Bato in Sagay to evacuate, and appeals have since been made for donations to aid the victims.
An 87-year-old woman also drowned in Purok Hillside in Barangay Fabrica.
Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva has declared the suspension of all classes in public and private schools in Sagay City on Monday, Feb. 2.
“This is a proactive measure to ensure the safety of students and residents as we continue to monitor the weather conditions and river levels,” he said.
Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said the eroded approach to the Himoga-an Bridge has reached the attention of Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson and Provincial Engineer Ernie Mapa.
“The eroded approach of the Himoga-an Bridge will be repaired immediately. A Provincial Engineer’s Office team will supervise the contractor’s mobilization of equipment and manpower starting Monday, February 2, and restoration work will continue until completed,” Diaz said.
“For everyone’s safety, we advise you to use the old overflow bridge while we undertake repairs,” he added.*
