Authorities confiscated an estimated P2.6 million worth of imported used clothing or “ukay-ukay” during a raid in Brgy. Paniabonan, Mabinay, Negros Oriental, on Wednesday, July 24.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Negros Oriental Provincial Field Unit, in coordination with the PNP Maritime Group in Dumaguete and local police, served a search warrant for alleged violation of Republic Act 4653, which prohibits the commercial importation of used clothing and rags.
Alias “Marissa,” was arrested during the operation after authorities discovered 259 bales of used clothing and apparel being sold and distributed without the required permits.
CIDG Acting Director PBGen. Romeo Macapaz said the seized items violate Republic Act 4653, which was enacted to protect public health and maintain national dignity by preventing the distribution of secondhand textiles that may be unsanitary or unhygienic.
The suspect will face charges before the National Prosecution Service for alleged violation of the law.
Macapaz reiterated the warning to the public regarding the health risks tied to buying “ukay-ukay” items and called on communities to report similar illegal activities.*
