Chief justice expected at nat’l legal aid summit

A national legal aid summit will be held at L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City from Monday to Wednesday, November 28-30.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo will give the keynote address during the opening ceremony on Monday to be attended by all the other SC justices.

SC Senior Associate Justice Marvic Mario Victor F. Leonen is the chairperson of the Committee on Access to Justice/Underserved Areas.

The summit will focus on the recognition of the human dignity of every person, the guarantee of full protection for human rights and adequate legal assistance to all, Mirano-Jesena said.

The theme of the summit is “Reimagining the Art of Legal Empowerment”.

The summit will focus on the recognition of human dignity of every human person and the guarantee of full protection for human rights as provided under Article II, Sec 11 of the 1987 Constitution and the guarantee that adequate legal assistance shall not be denied to any person by reason of poverty (Art. III, Sec. 11 of the 1987 Constitution, Mirano-Jesena said.

The summit will also focus on developing a roadmap to amplify, provide and sustain avenues of access towards the constitutional guarantee of adequate legal assistance, she added.*
