Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said the provincial government honored outstanding corporate and individual taxpayers at its Cinco de Noviembre rites on Tuesday, Nov. 5, because their contributions are crucial to the growth of Negros Occidental.

“Heroism is often associated with extraordinary acts, yet our understanding of heroism must also evolve,” Lacson said in his speech at the awarding rites.

Tax collection is the lifeblood of government, and the efficient, uninterrupted collection of taxes is crucial, he said.

“The need for resources to sustain our progress is essential — hence, the importance of taxation,” Lacson said.

“While there is unquestionable valor in defending our freedom against those who threaten it, there is also honor in the honest and steadfast fulfillment of one’s responsibilities — especially in an age when such dedication is sometimes overlooked,” he said.

He thanked the outstanding taxpayers for consistently meeting their tax obligations.

“Rest assured, your contributions are managed judiciously and prudently, and devoted to benefiting our people and our province to the fullest,” Lacson said.

The 10 outstanding individual taxpayers honored were Herminio Maravilla, Patrick Miguel Montilla, Vicky Lim, Francisco Manalo, Elena Corral, Gerard Baldevia, Garry Acuña, Dr. Ramon B. Gustilo, Mildred San Martin and Teodoro Suatengco.

The 10 outstanding corporate taxpayers honored were the Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company Inc., Victorias Milling Co. Inc., Tanduay Distillers Inc., Manapla Sun Power Development, Asian Alcohol Corp., New Foundland Agri Co. Inc., Philippine Spring Water Resources, Northern Negros Electric Cooperative, Philippine National Bank and Hesperus Agri and Development Co. Et. Al.*
