A 100-year-old resident of Poblacion 3, E. B. Magalona, received a cash award of P100,000 from the Negros Occidental provincial government on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Maria Salahog- Alegre, who turned 100 years old on February 9, received the cash award from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office.
She also received a certificate of recognition signed by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, as part of the Centenarian Awards program.
In July Alegre also received a cash award of P100,000 from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), under Republic Act 10866 or the “Centenarians Act of 2016.
Along with the cash award was a Letter of Felicitation from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Alegre is a native of E. B. Magalona. She is now a widow and receives a monthly US Veterans pension.
She got married at the age of 16 to Melquiades Alegre, a member of the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) – a military formation active from 1941 to 1946 – but was widowed a year later when her husband died in World War 2. They had no children.
Alegre is now being cared for by her niece, Cecilma Salahog, who lives with her.*
