
Flights at the Bacolod-Silay and Iloilo airports resumed normal operations on Wednesday, May 14, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said.
Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and AirAsia had cancelled some of their flights on Tuesday after an eruption at Kanlaon Volcano left ash in their airspace. Only the first flight of Cebu Pacific to the Bacolod Silay Airport on Wednesday morning was cancelled.
A CAAP advisory said flight operations are strongly advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit due to the potential hazards posed by volcanic ash.
The Philippine National Police – Negros Island Region (PNP-NIR) has shifted from election security operations to disaster response mode in all areas directly affected by the volcanic activity.
Bacolod City and 10 other towns and cities in Negros Occidental experienced ashfall sulfur smell after the explosive eruption on Tuesday.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council – Emergency Operations Center monitored ashfall or sulfur smell in the cities of La Carlota, Bago and San Carlos, as well as La Castellana, Murcia, San Enrique, Valladolid, Pontevedra, Hinigaran, and Binalbagan.
Various local governments and the Bureau of Fire Protection sent teams to help flush out ash on roads in affected areas, the Office of Civil Defense reported.*
