Burning of waste illegal, criminal raps can be filed

Burning of waste in neighborhoods is illegal.

This was stressed during the weekly radio program of Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez on Sunday, January 14.

A Barangay Felisa resident aired her complaint against neighbors who continue to burn their waste on “Isugid Mo Kay Mayor” aired over FMR Bacolod 91.1.

She said the burning was affecting the health of her child.

City Legal Officer Romeo Carlos Ting Jr. said people cannot burn their waste in their yards, there is a law that prohibits it.

“It is a criminal offense,” he said.

Those affected by such activity should lodge their complaints with their barangay captains.

Burning of wastes is a violation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or RA 9003. Any violators of RA 9003 shall be subjected to criminal proceedings.*
