Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) head Patrick Lacson on Monday, Dec. 11, submitted recommendations to Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez to enhance road safety measures in Bacolod City.
Lacson recommended the establishment of appropriate speed limits to reduce risk of accidents and promote safer driving habits.
The installation of slow down and accident-prone area traffic signs to serve as visual reminders to drivers to be cautious and aware of their surroundings is also needed, he said.
Lacson also recommended enhanced lighting infrastructure.
“Inadequate lighting can contribute to accidents, especially during low-light conditions. I recommend a comprehensive assessment of the current lighting infrastructure in Bacolod and the installation of additional lighting where needed. Well-lit streets create a safer environment for pedestrians and drivers,” he said.
The BTAO head is also calling for regular debris removal and road maintenance.
“Debris on the road poses a significant hazard to both drivers and pedestrians. Establishing a routine schedule for road maintenance, including debris removal, will help keep the streets clear and reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by obstacles on the road”, Lacson said.
Community awareness campaigns are also needed, he added.
Regular communication through community meetings, newsletters, and social media platforms can help educate residents and drivers about the importance of adhering to speed limits and maintaining road safety, Lacson said.
FINES
Traffic violators in Bacolod City from Dec. 1 to 7 were fined P279,900, he added.
That means average fines of about P40,000 a day.
There were 112 vehicles that were clamped and 122 were towed for parking violations, Lacson said.*
