Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez suspended classes at all levels in all public and private schools in Bacolod City Friday afternoon, March 8, to ensure the safety of students and teachers as extreme heat prevailed over the city for a second day.

A high heat index of 40 degrees prevailed over Bacolod City and Negros Occidental for a second day on Friday.

State weather bureau PAGASA stressed the need for extreme caution.

Some school officials in Bacolod City said they would continue with half day face to face classes to spare their students from the extreme heat.

They said some students were already suffering from colds.

Benitez on Friday issued Executive Order 13, Series of 2024 suspending classes in all levels of both public and private schools/universities in Bacolod due to the extreme heat index forecasted by DOST PAG-ASA.

Health authorities warn that extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat strokes.*
