The Bacolod City Government Center was abuzz on Saturday, August 16, as 814 students participating in the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) received their wages.
A total of P6.7 million was released for the program after Mayor Greg Gasataya signed a memorandum to expedite the payout, a press release from the Bacolod City Communications Office said on Sunday.
During the event Gasataya, accompanied by Public Employment Service Office head Mae Llamas and PESO Coordinator Jovelyn Canoy, encouraged the students to value not only the financial assistance but also the experience they gained during their 20-day employment.
The mayor reaffirmed the city’s commitment to the SPES program, promising to help beneficiaries secure future jobs. He also announced plans to reward students who graduate with Latin honors.
“As long as you strive to do better in your studies, the government will find ways to help you finish school,” the mayor said.
The summer jobbers, aged 15 to 30, were assigned to various tasks, including assisting with surveys and working in government offices and partner organizations.
Their 20-day service earned them between P9,600 and P12,300, with funds jointly provided by the local government and the Department of Labor and Employment.
Canoy advised the students to use their earnings responsibly and to share their blessings with their families.
Vice Mayor Claudio commended PESO and the city cashier’s office for ensuring the timely release of payments, even on a weekend.*
