The City Health Office (CHO) on Thursday issued reminders to Bacolodnons on coping with extreme heat and ensuring safe food and water consumption after the state weather bureau announced the start of the dry season this week.

Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environment Sanitation Division, said the hot weather can cause discomfort and lead to health problems for some people, especially those with existing health issues.

“If you get to experience heat stroke or heat exhaustion, immediately proceed to a shaded area and apply wet towel on the body,” she said.

“Avoid too much exposure to the sun. Bring an umbrella, wear a hat, and apply sunblock to avoid skin irritation. Also, don’t forget to take your maintenance medicines.”

Tan advised Bacolodnons to stay hydrated by taking adequate or more water.

The CHO is also monitoring water sources to ensure safe drinking water for the public.

“We sent a request to the barangays for them to account for their water sources. If a water source is contaminated, we can conduct disinfection. We monitor and update the status of water sources,” she said.

“Make sure that drinking water supply comes from a source that undergoes water monitoring and has (a) permit to guarantee safety.”

The health official also advised the public to avoid consuming food that has been exposed to heat for some time.

“If not confident and assured of the food source, don’t take the risk of consuming it,” she added.

On Wednesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced the official end of the northeast monsoon or “amihan” and the start of the dry season.

“Warmer days ahead, but occasional thunderstorms may still occur,” it said in an advisory.

PAGASA also urged the public to take precautionary measures to minimize heat stress and optimize the daily use of water for personal and domestic consumption.*PNA
