Another fire hits 18 houses, purok president injured

Another fire hit 18 houses and injured a purok president at Purok Kingfisher, Brgy 16, Bacolod City, at 2:42 a.m. Thursday, August 1. 

Injured was Purok Kingfisher president Alejandro Tiad, 49, who sustained second degree burns and was in stable condition at the Riverside Medical Center, the Bacolod Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) reported Thursday afternoon. 

There were 12 houses destroyed and 6 damaged costing P675,000, the report said. 

The fire affected 27 families with 99 members. Ten of the families with 49 members were temporarily staying at the Education Training Center School 1 Extension. 

Supt.  Jenny Mae Masip, Bacolod Fire Marshal, said the fire was caused by an overheated ceiling fan at the house of Gerald Arroyo. 

Tiad was already out of his burning house but neighbors said he returned to see if his child was left behind and to retrieve something, Masip added. 

Firefighters heard his shouts for help, found him lying on the floor of his burning house and rescued him, she said.

He sustained burns all over his body, had difficulty breathing, and was confined in the Intensive Care Unit of Riverside Medical Center, she said.

The fire hit the interior of the purok that could be reached only through a footwalk, she said. 

On Wednesday 71 houses were also destroyed and five were damaged in Barangay 2, Bacolod, the  city social welfare office reported.   

There were 85 families with 312 members affected.*
