An angry farmer beheaded his 58-year-old neighbor and hung her head on a cross at the public cemetery in Barangay Maquiling, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, at about 7 a.m. Saturday, November 26.

Farmer Randy Magbanua Maniego, 35, killed Gelly Alvior Recodo, 58, and injured her niece, Bernalyn Sanchez Abranilla, 28, of Sitio Pisong, Barangay Dian-ay, Escalante City, Lt. Col. Roberto Indiape Jr., Sagay police chief, said Sunday.

Indiape said Recodo and Abranilla were on the way to the market when they were followed by Maniego.

When they reached Purok Himaya in Brgy Maquiling, Maniego armed with a bolo hacked Abranilla first hitting her two fingers but she was able to escape.

Recodo also tried to escape but stumbled to the ground. The suspect then hacked her head off, Indiape said.

Maniego left Recodo’s body in a sugarcane field and residents who saw him walking towards the cemetery with her severed head called for help. He was arrested by barangay tanods at the cemetery, Indiape said.

Maniego had been sick and was suffering from depression his relatives told the police.

The suspect said he was angry at the victim for failing to pay him enough for the carabao he raised for her for 12 years, Inidiape said.

The suspect asked for P10,000 from the victim who took back the carabao but she only gave him P2,000, the police chief added.*
