The Bacolod Traffic Authority Council (BTAC) has approved a resolution recommending the holding of a car-free Sunday from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. along Lacson Street starting June 9.

Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, BTAC chair, said pollution from vehicles is among the biggest contributors to climate change.

To mark Environment Month in June they are recommending a four–hour carless Sunday wherein Lacson Street from South Capitol Road to Ramos (BS Aquino Drive)   will be closed to all motorized vehicles.

This will allow pedestrians, joggers and bikers to enjoy the 1.2 kilometer Lacson stretch for four hours every Sunday, Benitez said.

The carless Sunday started in  Europe in  2000,  was adopted in Sigapore and  in Ayala Avenue in Makati City in  September last year, Benitez said.

Benitez said they will consult with the business establishments in the area.*
