Houses along Ibid Creek where soil has eroded*
Nine houses along Ibid Creek in Brgy. Biak-na-Bato, La Castellana, have been recommended for permanent relocation due to soil erosion and the persistent threat of volcanic debris flow.
Donato Sermeno III, director of the Negros Island Region Office of Civil Defense, said on Monday, Sept. 29, that the soil beneath some of the houses has eroded, making the situation highly critical.
The homes are directly affected by floodwaters and volcanic debris that course down Ibid Creek, particularly during heavy rain, he said.
The heavy rains last week caused floodwaters and volcanic material to overflow the on to the creek banks and reach residential areas.
Sermeno noted that some of the houses’ yards and interiors are now covered with volcanic sediments, with one house already full of debris and unfit for occupancy.
Sermeno said they have spoken with the affected residents, and they are willing to be relocated.
As more floodwaters continue to wash debris downstream, additional houses are expected to be affected, he said.
Sermeno explained that the creek channel is currently full of volcanic debris that the water is forced to look for other paths to exit.
He added that clearing operations at the creek are still ongoing.*
