A 77-year-old woman was found lifeless beside a river in Sitio Lapuz, Purok 2, Brgy. 3, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, at around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 3.
The victim, a widow and resident of Purok Camatis, Brgy. Mambaroto, was believed to be washing clothes by the river near her home when she accidentally slipped and was swept away by the current into the deeper part of the river, a police report said.
At around 9:30 a.m. Sunday a concerned citizen called the Sipalay City Police Station to report the incident.
Responding teams from the Philippine Coast Guard and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) quickly proceeded to the area and found the elderly woman lying face down near the riverbank.
She was immediately brought to the Sipalay City Infirmary, where she was declared dead.*
