71-year-old nabbed at port for illegal possession of firearm

A 71-year-old man was arrested after authorities discovered a firearm and ammunition inside his baggage at the Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) terminal at the Bredco Port, Bacolod City, on October 14.

The Bacolod City Police Office port security personnel detected the firearm using an X-ray scanner and immediately alerted authorities for verification.

Upon inspection, the suspect failed to present any permit or license for the weapon.

Recovered from his possession was a .38 caliber revolver (ARMSCOR 200) with serial number 60-261, loaded with six live rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was arrested on the spot for violating Republic Act 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

He is now detained at Police Station 2, while the seized firearm and ammunition were turned over to the Negros Occidental Provincial Forensic Unit for ballistic examination and documentation.

Authorities are conducting further investigation to determine the extent of the suspect’s activities and the source of the firearm.

The Maritime Police said they are intensifying patrols and security inspections at ports and other entry points across Negros Occidental to prevent similar incidents and ensure public safety.

They also urged the public to report any suspicious activities that may threaten peace and security in the area.*
