Six persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were released from the Negros Occidental District Jail-Male Dormitory in Bago City on Christmas Eve.
Chief Insp. Juniven Rey Umadhay, spokesperson of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR), said in an interview on Thursday. Dec. 25, that the PDLs have served their respective sentences with deductions as provided under the Good Conduct Time Allowance Law.
“They were released after showing open and observable good conduct in jail,” he added. “Each released individual underwent proper evaluation and clearance before being granted freedom.”
Four of the PDLs were sentenced for committing murder, reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, acts of lasciviousness and homicide.
One committed violation of Article II, Section 5 (sale of dangerous drugs), Section 11 (possession of dangerous drugs) and Section 12 (possession of equipment or paraphernalia) of Republic Act (RA) 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
The other one was sentenced for grave threats and violation of RA 7166 related to prohibited acts during the election period.
“Their timely release underscores the BJMP’s commitment to humane corrections, restorative justice, and the promotion of compassion, especially during the season of love, forgiveness, and hope,” Umadhay said.
He noted that such “moment marks not only their freedom but also an opportunity to rebuild relationships, restore dignity, and reintegrate into society as productive individuals.”
From the institutional perspective, the release of PDLs contributes to the decongestion of jail facilities, enabling the BJMP to better manage remaining PDLs and further improve jail services, security and welfare programs, he added. *PNA
