There are 300 families from the Kanlaon Volcano 6-kilometer extended danger zone in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, who have expressed willingness to relocate.
The residents from four barangays communicated their willingness to relocate during consultations, said John BF de Asis, head of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of La Castellana.
Preparations for the provincial government’s purchase of an 8.6-hectare property in Barangay Talaptap, La Castellana, are underway, he said.
The relocation site will provide residents with space for their houses and livelihoods.
De Asis added that the site development is part of the proposal in the Kanlaon Recovery and Development Plan.
Meanwhile, the clearing of lahar residue at the Ibid Creek in Barangay Biak-na-Bata, La Castellana, is ongoing, he said.
Because of the rainy season, it’s inevitable that volcanic sediments from the upper part of the volcano will be washed into the creek every time it rains.*
