Barangay captains in Negros Occidental who awarded scholarships under the Bawat Barangay Makikinabang Program to their relatives are returning the funds and selecting substitute beneficiaries, Board Member Richard Julius Sablan said Tuesday, August 25.
Sablan, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay – Negros Occidental Chapter, said he visited the barangay in Cauayan where two children of the barangay captain were named program beneficiaries. Both children had already received ₱20,000 each, but Sablan confirmed the funds have since been returned and replacement beneficiaries are being identified.
A barangay captain from Bago City visited the Liga ng mga Barangay office to return the ₱20,000 awarded to his son. In Moises Padilla, another barangay captain committed to returning the scholarship money granted to a relative, Sablan added.
For barangays that have not yet released their scholarship funds, Sablan reminded local officials to strictly avoid granting the awards to their relatives.*
