22 rescued, including 11 minors, after motorized banca capsizes in San Carlos

All 22 passengers, including 11 minors, were rescued after a motorized banca capsized in the waters off Brgy. San Juan, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, on Friday afternoon, Nov. 6.

The Negros Occidental Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA) reported that the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. while the vessel, identified as M/V Gracelle, was traveling from Sipaway Island to San Carlos City proper.

The boat captain said  the vessel encountered strong water currents and sudden changes in wind conditions during the voyage.

The adverse sea conditions reportedly caused the motorized banca to lose stability and eventually capsize.

The incident was reported to maritime police personnel by the team leader of Bantay Dagat San Carlos, prompting an immediate rescue operation.

Personnel from MARPSTA, the Philippine Coast Guard, Bantay Dagat, San Carlos City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and civilian volunteers responded.

Rescuers deployed three boats, including Bantay Dagat 101, a Stingray Bantay Dagat Speedboat, and Poseidon Speedboat, to assist the stranded passengers.

All 22 passengers were rescued, with no fatalities or injuries reported.

The passengers and crew were assessed to be in good physical condition after receiving medical assistance from the San Carlos City government.

Authorities identified the capsized vessel as a motorized banca powered by a 16-horsepower Honda engine and owned by Gracelle Mahilum Rallios.*
