The 40th EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary on Wednesday, Feb. 25, has not been declared a national non-working holiday, but five towns in Negros Occidental and several schools in Bacolod City have suspended classes to honor its legacy.
The municipalities of Isabela, Candoni, and Hinigaran have suspended work in all government offices and classes in both public and private schools.
La Castellana and Hinoba-an are suspending classes, but government work will continue.
LGUs have a legal basis to declare work and class suspensions, Neil Andrew Yanson, legal officer of the Department of Interior and Local Government-Negros Island Region, said.
It is legal based on the General Welfare clause of the Local Government Code, he said.
SCHOOLS SUSPEND CLASSES
Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, and St. Scholastica’s Academy have also suspended classes on Wednesday.
There will also be a half-day suspension of classes at La Consolacion College Bacolod.
The University of St. La Salle, in its Facebook post announcing the suspension of classes, said remembering EDSA is not only about honoring the past, but about understanding the present.
“The concerns that moved Filipinos to stand together 40 years ago remain pressing and relevant up to this day, particularly the pursuit of truth, justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity,” USLS said.
St. Scholastica’s Academy – Bacolod said the People Power Revolution was “a moment in history that shaped the soul of our nation.”
“On February 25, we pause—not just to mark a date on the calendar, but to remember the courage, the unity, and the peaceful call for freedom that rang through the streets,” it said.
A mass and march-rally will be held in Bacolod City to commemorate the People Power Revolution on Wednesday.
A mass to be officiated by Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon will be held in front of the Negros Occidental Capitol in Bacolod City at 12:30 p.m., to be followed by a march at 1:30 p.m. towards Gonzaga Street, between the Bacolod Public Plaza and Plaza Mart, where a rally will be held, Fr. Arman Onion said on Monday.*
