Two ash emissions at Kanlaon Volcano lasted 8 hours and 9 minutes on Wednesday, Jan. 7, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The first ash emission occurred at 2:58 a.m. and lasted for 6 hours and 21 minutes, while the second at 11:05 p.m. lasted for 1 hour and 48 minutes, an updated Phivolcs report on Thursday said.
The volcano had four volcanic earthquakes and emitted 854 tons of sulfur dioxide on Wednesday.
Entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone and flying any aircraft close to the volcano is not allowed.
Possible hazards that can occur are sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity, Mari-Andylene Quintia, Phivolcs resident volcanologist at the Kanlaon Observatory in La Carlota City, said.
She reiterated that ash emissions are precursors to a volcanic eruption, but they cannot predict when it will happen.*
