The bulk of the 1,350 tents for three “tent cities” being readied for the Kanlaon Volcano evacuees have arrived in Negros, Donato Sermeno III, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Negros Island Region head, said Thursday, Jan. 9.
He said 390 tents from the OCD head office were delivered to Himamaylan City on Thursday.
A tent city for the evacuees is being readied at the Tree Park in Himamaylan, he said.
Sermeno said 390 tents also arrived in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, for storage.
The tents for Vallehermoso in Negros Oriental will be delivered first to San Carlos City.
They have also requested for earth pads or rubber mats for the tents, he said.
The tent cities are being prepared for a possible declaration of Alert Level 4 that would expand the Kanlaon Volcano’s danger zone to 10 kilometers and increase the number of evacuees, he said.
It will cost P15,311,398,700 a month to feed a surge in evacuees if Alert Level 4 is raised, OCD 6 (Western Visayas) Director Raul Fernandez, Task Force Kanlaon chairman, said on Wednesday.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority shows 29,200 families or 124,053 individuals would be covered by a 10-kilometer radius evacuation, he said.*
