12 Visayas power plants shutdown but NGCP lifts yellow, red alerts

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) lifted its red and yellow alerts over Negros and the rest of the Visayas late Tuesday night, April 16.

NGCP had raised the yellow and red alerts over the Visayas earlier Tuesday after 12 power plants went on forced outage, while five others were running on derated capacities.

That meant a total of 676.5MW unavailable to the grid, the NGCP announced.

Michelle Visera, NGCP spokesperson, said forced outage means unplanned shutdowns by power plants, while derated capacity is when a power plant produces less than its full capacity.

The NGCP issued a yellow alert for 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, it said.

However, late Tuesday afternoon NGCP raised its alert status to red due to the outage of an additional power plant with a 103MW capacity.

Manual load dropping or rotational power interruptions may be implemented to protect the integrity of the power system from 5 to 9 p.m., NGCP warned.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement, NGCP said.

The NGCP also  declared red and yellow alerts in the Luzon grid on Tuesday after 19 power plants went on forced outage.*
