11 Bacolod leptospirosis cases, one death in November: CHO

There were 11 recorded leptospirosis cases and one death in Bacolod City in November, the City Health Office reported on Wednesday, Nov. 26,

The fatality was from Barangay Mansilingan.

The figures are partial because they are only from one hospital, the CHO said.

The CHO is providing free prophylaxis at health centers for those who were exposed to recent floods in Bacolod.

The Provincial Health Office earlier reported 90 cases of suspected leptospirosis and four deaths in November.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reminded residents to take extra precautions and seek medical help for leptospirosis.

The Provincial Health Office has available Doxycycline to be used as prophylaxis for residents who were exposed to flood waters, PHO head Dr. Girlie Pinongan said.

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals, especially rats, which can contaminate floodwaters.

The primary danger of leptospirosis is its potential to cause severe, life-threatening multi-organ failure if not treated promptly, the DOH warns.*
