1-year-old boy dies of suspected rabies

A 1-year-old boy from Moises Padilla town who was bitten on the face by a family pet died on Monday, January 22, Dr. Girlie Pinongan, Negros Occidental provincial health officer, said Tuesday.

The boy was bitten by the dog at Barangay Macagahay, Moises Padilla, on January 13 and died at the Don Salvador Benedicto District Hospital in La Carlota City on Monday.

No immediate treatment was sought for the child, prior to his being brought to the hospital.

There were six suspected human deaths from rabies in Negros Occidental in 2023 and ten in 2022, Pinongan said.

Pinongan stressed the need to seek early treatment, especially for injuries on the face and head.

She also stressed the need for veterinarians of local government units to ensure that responsable pet ownership is practiced in their localities.*
