The vaccination of minors aged 12 to 17 years old against COVID-19 could pave the way for the eventual return to face-to-face classes, Negros Occidental Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said Wednesday, November 3.

This will help in creating herd immunity and will protect minors should face-to-face classes resume, he said.

The provincial government vaccinated 56 minors aged 12 to 17 with Pfizer vaccines at the Negros Residences in Bacolod City, and 66 minors with comorbidities at the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital (TLJPH) in Silay City on Wednesday.

The vaccination of all minors without comorbidities is being conducted at the Negros Residences and at all LGUs.

Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are being used for the minors, Diaz said.

Minors wanting to be vaccinated at the Negros Residences can set appointments at the Provincial Health Office or through the 911 hotline, while for towns and cities they can sign up at their LGUs to ensure the orderly conduct of the drive, Diaz said.

Vaccination sites for minors with comorbidities are at the TLJPH, Cadiz District Hospital and Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital, he said.

The vaccination of the minors will cover a large chunk of Negros Occidental’s population, he added.

Diaz said the provincial government vaccination drive at the barangay level is also already in the works.

He reiterated his call for Negrenses to protect themselves against COVID by getting them vaccinated.

Meanwhile, Diaz identified the doctor from the Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City who died in October as Dr. John Vic Caagbay.

He was confined at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center for one and a half month and succumbed to multiple organ failure in late October, Diaz said.*
