Heavy rain triggered two landslides, flooding and evacuations in northern Negros Occidental on Wednesday, January 11.
A landslide destroyed a house and injured an 8-year-old boy in Sitio Panlucasan, Barangay Cabatangan, Talisay City, Social Welfare Officer Dionela Madrona said.
The boy who suffered from an eye injury was admitted at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.
The five members of his family are now staying at the house of a relative and have been provided assistance by Talisay Mayor Neil Lizares, Madrona said.
A landslide in Barangay Paraiso, Sagay City, also partially blocked a road but was cleared later in the day, Zephard Caelian, Provincial Disaster Management Program Division head, said.
The rain triggered by a shear line and low pressure area also caused flooding, Caelian added.
Caelian said 44 families with 135 members were affected by flooding in barangays Old Sagay, Bulanon, Poblacion 2, Paraiso and Malubon in Sagay City, which triggered evacuations.
There were also 207 families with 674 members affected by flooding in barangays Luna, Daga, Tinampaan, Cabahug, Sicaba, and Burgos in Cadiz City, he added.
Flooding caused the evacuation of 17 families with 56 members in Barangay Dulao, Bago City, he also said.
Sea travel from San Carlos City in Negros Occidental to Toledo, Cebu, was also temporarily cancelled on Wednesday.
Some vessels from Iloilo to Bacolod also cancelled their trips.*
