Degamo backs NORECO II franchise extension, cites need for reliable power in Negros Oriental

Rep. Janice Degamo  (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) has expressed support for the extension of the franchise of the Negros Oriental II Electric Cooperative (NORECO II), saying reliable electricity remains vital to the province’s growth and development.

Degamo, in a statement on Thursday, said she is joining fellow lawmakers in supporting legislation that seeks to secure the future operations of NORECO II and the communities it serves.

The lawmaker said dependable power supply is essential for economic growth, job creation, education, healthcare, and the overall quality of life of residents.

“By supporting the extension of NORECO II’s franchise, we are helping ensure that families, businesses, farmers, fisherfolk, and entire communities across Negros Oriental continue to receive the power they need to thrive,” Degamo said.

She also commended fellow legislators who supported the measure, emphasizing the role of rural electric cooperatives in bringing development to towns and barangays.

Degamo said the proposed franchise extension is not only about allowing the cooperative to continue operating but also about investing in the future of Negros Oriental and protecting a service relied upon by hundreds of thousands of consumers.

The congresswoman added that she will continue supporting measures aimed at strengthening the power sector, improving service reliability, and ensuring access to affordable and dependable electricity.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns over power supply reliability in the Visayas, with lawmakers and consumers calling for long-term solutions to recurring power interruptions affecting the region.

NORECO II serves several local government units in Negros Oriental and is among the electric cooperatives responsible for distributing electricity to consumers in the province.*
