A red alert is up for the Visayas grid from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, as capacity is not enough to meet both the demand and the grid’s regulating requirement.
In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said a yellow alert is also in effect from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 8 p.m to 9 p.m.
This came as available capacity is pegged to be around 2,312 megawatts (MW) while peak demand is projected to hit 2,395MW.
NGCP issues a yellow alert when the operating margin is inadequate against contingency requirements, while a red alert is raised when capacity is not enough to meet both the demand and the regulating requirement of the grid.
Capacity is low due to continued unavailability of the generating Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI), as well as Unit 1 of Kepco SPC Power Corp. (KSPC).
Also, electricity imports from the Mindanao grid are lower due to high demand from that grid.
Just this month alone, eight power plants in the Visayas are unavailable while 20 others have been on forced outage in the past five years.
There are 13 other power plants operating on derated capacities, or a total loss of around 896.3MW to the grid.*PNA
