The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center conducted a week-long specialized training on abalone hatchery operations in Brgy. Molocaboc, Sagay City, which ended Wednesday, June 28.
The seminar was held to train Sagaynons in abalone food production and at the same time equip them on how to manage their hatchery, a press release from Sagay City said.
The training was led by Dr. Shiela Buen Ursua, Rafael Barrido, Bennie Briones, and Donna Jumilla, who are experts from SEAFDEC.
The project on abalone production started in Carbin Reef in 2000 and was replicated in Molocaboc this year for the community to appreciate its impact and importance.
Mayor Narciso “Narwin” Javelosa Jr. said that the city government is grateful to SEAFDEC for their continued collaboration in providing the necessary training to empower our fisherfolk towards biodiversity.
The project is a partnership between SEAFDEC and Sagay Marine Reserve led by Mayo Anto Cueva, SCENRO head and Protected Area superintendent, with Resource Management Section Head Jose Roberto Togle.*
