69-year-old farmer dies after stabbing-hacking fight over cigarette in Murcia

A 69-year-old farmer died while another man was injured after they allegedly stabbed and hacked each other following an argument over a cigarette in Murcia, Negros Occidental, late Sunday night, Aug. 9.

The Murcia policeidentified the victim only as “Berto,” a married farmer.

Police said the incident happened at around 11:57 p.m. at Hacienda Sta. Angela in Brgy. Abu-abo.

Investigation showed that the suspect went to the victim’s store to buy a cigarette but was told that the stock had already run out.

The suspect allegedly insisted, leading to a heated altercation between the two.

Police said the victim was armed with a bladed weapon while the suspect carried a bolo, and the two subsequently attacked each other.

The victim sustained stab wounds on the lower left side his abdomen, while the suspect suffered multiple hack wounds on different parts of his body.

The victim was rushed to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center where he was declared dead.

Responding police officers arrested the suspect and brought him to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, where he was admitted and placed under hospital arrest.

Authorities recovered a bolo without a scabbard from the scene.
