Visayas grid on red, yellow alerts today

The Visayas grid is under red and yellow alerts today, May 29, due to tight power supply, high demand, and the unavailability of several major power plants.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said that as of 8:30 a.m., the red alert will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Yellow alerts will also be in effect from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,562 megawatts against a peak demand of 2,542 megawatts.

The alert was declared as 11 plants have been on forced outage since May 2026, one plant since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021.

Fifteen power plants are also running on derated capacities, bringing the total unavailable capacity to 952.4 megawatts.

The red alert declaration was attributed to the unavailability of major coal plants in the Visayas, including TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC 2, along with the high system demand forecast.

A red alert is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

NGCP also said the Luzon and Mindanao grids are expected to operate under normal conditions.*
