A barangay tanod was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in Purok Dahlia, Brgy. Puey, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, early Monday morning, Aug. 25.
Police identified the victim as Marbelito Opindo, a resident of the said barangay.
Initial investigation showed that a nearby resident heard three successive gunshots at around 2 a.m. and immediately reported the incident to the Punong Barangay, who along with other tanods, proceeded to the area and found Opindo laying on a narrow pathway in a sugarcane field, just about five meters from the road.
Opindo sustained several gunshot wounds on his body and was declared dead at the scene.
Police recovered a cartridge case from the possible weapon but have yet to determine the motive behind the killing.
The authorities also requested assistance from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) as well as with the 1st Negros Occidental Provincial Mobile Force Company, the Special Action Forces and the Philippine Army for security support.
