SineMargaha funded “Taga-Taga” wins Best Student Short Film at Sinag fest

The Margaha-funded short film “Taga-Taga (Praying Mantis)” directed by Trini Garcia was awarded Best Short Film (Student Category), standing out among over 300 entries nationwide at the Sinag Maynila 2025 Independent Film Festival in Metro Manila, Sept. 28.

The film previously won Best Short Film at the Margaha Film Festival 2024, proving its resonance both locally and nationally, a press release from Sagay City said on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Garcia expressed how meaningful the award is not only for him but for his entire team and the people of Sagay City.

“To be named a finalist was already a win in itself, because my true goal has always been to inspire fellow creatives, especially the young ones, to keep creating, to take risks, and to bring new art into the world,” he said.

Also making waves at Sinag Maynila was “Si Sir kag ang Gamay nga Bata” by Seb Valdez, which was nominated for Best Picture.

Valdez extended his gratitude to his cast and crew and to the Margaha Film Festival and City Government of Sagay for enabling their story to come to life.

Meanwhile, “Walo-Walo: Walo ka Adlaw nga Kanay, Walo ka Adlaw nga Labugay” by Mery Grace Rama-Mission was shortlisted among the 16 entries in the open category.

Rama-Mission described the experience as a meaningful step for regional shorts and expressed gratitude to Sinag Maynila and the City of Sagay for giving their film a place on the big screen.

Mayor Leo Rafael M. Cueva lauded the filmmakers, saying these recognitions prove that Sagay is not only rich in natural beauty but also in creativity and cultural talent.

“Our young filmmakers are telling stories that resonate beyond our shores, and the City Government will continue to support platforms like the Margaha Film Festival to nurture these voices”, Cueva added.

Sinag Maynila, founded by internationally acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza, is one of the Philippines’ premier independent film festivals, spotlighting fresh voices and authentic narratives from across the country.*
