A San Carlos City government job order worker was shot to death Monday, months after her husband was also killed, Mayor Renato Gustilo said Tuesday, October 19.

Maria Elena Belos Peque, 40, of San Julio Subdivision in Barangay 2, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, was on board a tricycle on the way to the San Carlos City Hall when she was shot by a gunman on a motorcycle, the police said.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound on the head and was rushed to the San Carlos City Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

It is possible that she was killed over a land dispute that allegedly also was the motive for the killing of her husband early this year, the police said.

Peque was a job order worker assigned to the city government’s accounting office and has two young children, Gustilo said.

Gustilo said there are talks that she was killed because of an unpaid debt.

CCTV footage showed that the gunman and the driver of the motorcycle were wearing helmets, the mayor said.*
